2010 AWARDS HONOREES

The Sherman Brothers Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman are leading composer-lyricists in family entertainment. Their career spans five decades and includes winning two Academy Awards for MARY POPPINS (score) and CHIM CHIM CHER-EE (song). The Sherman Brothers also wrote the world’s most translated and performed song, IT’S A SMALL WORLD (AFTER ALL).

Musical honors include nine Oscar nominations, three Grammy Awards, twenty-four Gold and Platinum albums, a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The Sherman’s first gained recognition in popular music with such top-ten hits as YOU’RE SIXTEEN, LET’S GET TOGETHER and TALL PAUL. 1960 marked the start of their ten-year exclusive association with Walt Disney. As his staff songwriters, they wrote over 200 songs for his films, TV shows and Theme Parks. Their 36 feature Disney film credits include JUNGLE BOOK, THE PARENT TRAP, THE ARISTOCATS, BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS, THE HAPPIEST MILLIONAIRE, THE FAMILY BAND, THE SWORD IN THE STONE, and THE WINNIE THE POOH series.

They went on to write song scores for SNOOPY COME HOME, CHARLOTTE’S WEB, the Broadway musical hit, OVER HERE!, and the fantasmagorical CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG. The brothers then created both the screenplays and song scores for TOM SAWYER, HUCKLEBERRY FINN, THE MAGIC OF LASSIE, and THE SLIPPER AND THE ROSE, which was chosen as the 1976 Royal Command film. More recently, they wrote the songs for the Disney animated feature, The TIGGER MOVIE, BEVERLY HILLS COP 3, and the stage musical, BUSKER ALLEY.

Currently, the Sherman Brothers have two hit shows on the boards. After an almost four year record-breaking run in London, CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG is currently on an English national tour, and the stage production of MARY POPPINS is in its fourth year as one of the biggest hits on Broadway and has touring productions all around the world.

In November of 2008, the Shermans were awarded the ‘National Medal of Arts’ by President Bush in a ceremony at the White House.

Mint Theater Company produces worthwhile plays from the past that have been lost or forgotten.  These neglected plays offer special and specific rewards; it is our mission to bring new vitality to these plays and to foster new life for them.

Under the leadership of Jonathan Bank, Mint has secured a place in the crowded theatrical landscape of New York City.  We have received Special Obie and Drama Desk Awards recognizing the importance of our mission and our success in fulfilling it.

The Mint’s process of excavation, reclamation and preservation makes an important contribution to the art form and its enthusiasts.  Scholars have the chance to come into contact with historically significant work that they’ve studied on the page but never experienced on the stage.  Local theatergoers have the opportunity to see plays that would otherwise be unavailable to them.  Important plays with valuable lessons to teach—plays that have been discarded or ignored—are now read, studied, performed, discussed, written about and enjoyed as a result of The Mint’s work.

The Mint not only produces lost plays; they also publish their work and distribute their books, free of charge to libraries, theaters and universities.  The catalog of books now includes an anthology of seven plays entitled Worthy but Neglected: Plays of the Mint Theater plus three volumes in the “Reclaimed” series, each featuring the work of a single author: Harley Granville Barker, St. John Hankin and Arthur Schnitzler.
